Position Overview

  • Beam is seeking a talented and dynamic Senior Scientist to join our growing Experimental Genomics & Off-Target Biology team at our state-of-the-art lab and office facilities in Cambridge, MA. This Senior Scientist will be responsible for tackling complex technical problems related to off-target editing for therapeutic program advancement and platform development using published, custom, and novel NGS-based assays. This new role will be embedded within a team of stellar experimental and computational biologists. Candidates for this role should excel at working both independently and in service of highly cross-functional, interdisciplinary research projects. The successful applicant will have a strong scientific background in genomics assays and/or gene editing, a track record of excellence in scientific collaboration and communication, and a passion for driving scientific innovation at the forefront of gene editing. This is an on-site position located in Cambridge, MA.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, development, and execution of NGS-based assays and experiments to assess the activity and specificity of base editors, aimed at addressing fundamental questions related to off-target biology.
  • Provide creative, efficient, and strategic experimental solutions at all stages of the discovery and therapeutic development process.
  • Engage in impactful research projects to strengthen Beam’s off-target biology platform and streamline our therapeutic pipeline.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other teams and individuals across Beam’s integrated research platform and beyond, including other experimental biologists, computational biologists, therapeutic areas, nonclinical development, and others.
  • Act as an internal subject-matter expert in topics related to genomics and NGS assays.
  • Execute IND-enabling off-target studies in support of therapeutic programs.
  • Contribute to regulatory reports and scientific publications.
  • Lead by example in scientific excellence and mentorship, fostering a culture of growth and collaboration with team members.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of experiments in electronic lab notebooks.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in molecular biology, functional genomics, bioengineering, or other relevant field of biology with additional 4-6 years of relevant experience; or a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree with 12-15 years of relevant experience.
  • Industry experience is preferred, especially in fast-paced, matrixed environments.
  • Extensive first-hand, bench-science experience and skills, especially with diverse NGS-enabled methods, and ideally including assay development and troubleshooting.
  • Technical mastery of molecular biology, cell biology, genomics, gene editing technologies, and/or NGS-based methods.
  • A strong track-record of effective cross-functional, interdisciplinary collaboration required, especially with computational biologists.
  • Strong communication, organization, and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with basic sequencing data analysis is preferred.
  • This is an on-site position located in Cambridge, MA.
